Treatment of patient with anaplastic oligodendroglioma – case report

Objective: This case study describes almost 8 years long survival of a patient with an anaplastic oligodengroglioma. Case report: Description of treatment of a 39-years old patient diagnosed with an anaplastic oligodendroglioma. Primary treatment consisted of subtotal extirpation of the tumour, followed by 3D conformal radiotherapy. First progression of the disease in the corpus callosum was treated with 12 cycles of temozolomid (TMZ), second, in the same location, with 5 cycles of lomustin. The third progression again in the corpus callosum and in vermis cerebelli was treated with fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy. Conclusion: Imaging methods like multiparametric MR and amino acids-based PET scan enable to differentiate the progression of the disease from post-therapeutic changes. As shown also by this case study, the WHO classification of brain tumours from 2016 does not correspond completely to all histological types of brain tumours. Repeated application of radiotherapy, as well as systemic treatment based on modern imaging methods, enables effective management of this disease with an acceptable quality of life.
