Interventional pain procedures for refractory cancer pain

Pain is the most common symptom linked to oncological illnesses. It has a negative impact on the course of the illness and it significantly decreases the patient‘s quality of life. The neurophysiology of oncological pain is very complex. It involves inflammatory, neuropathic, ischemic and compression mechanisms commonly acting synergistically. The knowledge of these mechanisms and the ability to determine, whether the pain is nociceptive, neuropathic, psychogenic or a combination of all, will lead to the correct choice of therapeutic strategy, which, besides pharmacological treatment options, also involves a broad spectrum of interventional pain management techniques. However phramacotherapy remains golden standard of pain treatment in oncology.
