Hypofractionated radiotherapy versus conventional radiotherapy in patients with breast cancer
Hypofractionated whole breast radiotherapy has been shown to be effective and safe for patients with early breast cancer compared to conventional radiotherapy after breast conserving surgery. Moreover, it improves patient convenience and quality of life and is beneficial in the medical care system by reducing the overall cost of treatment. This review article discusses about the radiobiology aspects of hypofractionated radiotherapy, key randomized studies, and adequate patient selection, as proposed by the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in cooperation with European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) in connection with its adoption into clinical practice as a new standard of treatment.
