Inflammation and gastric cancer: Helicobacter pylori

Infection of Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) can lead to chronic gastritis and subsequently to gastric adenocarcinoma. Population infected with CagA (cytotoxin-associated gene A) positive H.pylori is at a higher risk of developing gastric carcinoma than CagA-negative. CagA positive populations have a different oncogenic potential according to EPIYA type, while EPIYA-D occuring mostly in East Asia is highly pathogenic. H. pylori can support tumorigenesis by different mechanisms.
