Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting – clinical guidelines and clinical practice
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is one of the most feared anticancer treatments side effects. Evidence based guidelines for prevention and treatment of CINV were published by the NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network, USA), MASCC (Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer) and ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) in 1997 – 1998 and then several times updated. Clinical trials confirmed better control of CINV with the guideline’s consistent treatment. Better control of CINV improves patients’ quality of life and decreases the number of unplanned medical interventions needed during the anticancer treatment. However, the clinical studies show that many patients (about 15% – > 50%) are not receiving the guidelines consistent preventive treatment. This suggests that further spread of information and education about the guidelines and CINV, aimed not only at the physicians but also at the other health care workers and patients, could help in decreasing the CINV incidence.
