Anal cancer

Anal cancer is a rare malignancy associated with infection by human papillomavirus (HPV). Primary treatment of anal cancer includes chemoradiation. Salvage surgery by abdomino- perineal resection should be reserved for patients with poor response, tumor progression or relaps after chemoradiation. Disease surveillance is recomended for all patients with anal cancer because additional curative-intent treatment is possible. 5-fluorouracil and mitomycin C concurrent with radiation is a standard treatment.
