New options in the treatment of atopic dermatitis: targeted treatment of moderate to severe forms with innovative drugs

Atopic dermatitis (or atopic eczema) is common inflammatory skin disease usually starting in early childhood and in certain percentage of patients persisiting well into adulthood. It is characterized by eczematous lesions and intense pruritus, affecting the quality of life of the patient. Atopic dermatitis is multifactorial disease with many comorbidities requiring complex treatment. Topical treatment is therapeutic mainstay prolonging the remission in milder forms of atopic dermatitis, but the moderate-to-severe atopic dermatis often requires systemic treatment. New innovative drugs with high efficacy and favorable safety profile are the option for patients with severe forms of atopic dermatitis.
