Scar management – current therapeutic recommendations and an algorithm for dermatological practice

Scarringis a physiological outcome of wound healing; however, dysregulation of inflammatory and remodeling phases may result in pathological scars, particularly hypertrophic scars and keloids. Beyond aesthetic concerns, scars are frequently associated with pruritus, pain, and significant psychosocia lburden. This review provides an updated overview of scar pathophysiology, risk factors, prevention strategies, and current evidence-based therapeutic options . Silicone-based products remain first-line therapy, while combination approaches are recommended for keloids due to high recurrence rates . Laser modalities and emerging biological therapies are increasingly integrated into modern scar management algorithms.
