Skin microbiome and atopic dermatitis

As an interface with the environment, the skin is a complex ecosystem colonized by many microorganisms that under physiological conditions coexist in an established balance. In patients with atopic dermatitis, a decrease in microbiome diversity correlates with disease severity and increased colonization with pathogenic bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus. Pathogenic staphylococci express several molecules that contribute to the intensity of symptoms of the disease. They may act to disrupt barrier function and promote disease pathogenesis by proinflammatory activity. With the current knowledge of microbiome effects on the onset of the disease, there are evolving interventions targeting microbiome for the treatment of atopic dermatitis.
