Acrodermatitis enteropathica and metabolic disorders that resemble its cutaneous features
Acrodermatitis enteropathica is rare, inherited disorder caused by an insufficient absorption of zinc in the small intestine and is characterized by a triad of acral and periorifical skin lesions, diarrhea and alopecia. The condition typically becomes manifest shortly after weaning. Patients require lifelong zinc supplementation. The cutaneous features resembling acrodermatitis enteropathica have been described also in patients with biotin deficiency, organic acidurias, essential fatty acid deficiency and cystic fibrosis.
