Solvent/detergent treated pooled plasma and commercial coagulation factors as a substitution of fresh frozen plasma

Introduction: Blood products treatment is related to many risks. That is why it is necessary to look for alternative methods. Fresh frozen plasma can be replaced with safer commercial medicaments, coagulation factors and solvent/detergent treated pooled plasma. Materials and methods: In the period 2012 – 2022 consumption of plasma products and commercial coagulation factors, incidence of transfusion reactions and total plasma production were monitored at the University Hospital Brno. Results: The total consumption of plasma products decreased during the monitored period and the majority of fresh frozen plasma was replaced with solvent/detergent pooled plasma and coagulation factors. The consumption of fibrinogen and concentrate of prothrombin complex increased approximately three times. The frequency of transfusion reactions decreased significantly (FFP 0,18 vs. S/DP 0,01). By contrast, the total production of plasma increased two times and the production of plasma for fractionation even three times. Conclusion: The gradual substitution of fresh frozen plasma with solvent/detergent treated pooled plasma and commercial coagulation factors led to an improvement of quality and safety of healthcare and it was manifested by significant transfusion reaction decrease. The raise of the fractionation plasma production and distribution represents an important benefit for the hospital economic result.
