Lung donor management

Lung transplantation improves the quality of life of transplant patients. Mortality of patients placed on the waiting list is still high. The lack of donors is linked to the lack of organs and tissues suitable for transplantation. Moreover, lungs are procured and transplanted from only 10-20% of the overall brain dead donor population. For these reasons, the criteria of an acceptable lung donor are adjusted and the so-called protocolized care (mainly recruitment maneuvers, PEEP ≥8 cm H2O, hormone replacement therapy and restrictive fluid strategy) in order to increase the number of lungs acceptable for transplant purposes.
